Boat & Watercraft Insurance

Smooth Sailing with the Right Coverage

There’s nothing like a day on the water – whether you’re fishing, waterskiing, or just cruising on Cherokee Lake or Douglas Lake. But along with fun and relaxation comes responsibility. Boat ownership can introduce risks: accidents on the water, storms that damage your boat, or theft of equipment. Vallie Insurance offers specialized boat and watercraft insurance to protect your boat, your passengers, and yourself. As fellow outdoor enthusiasts in East Tennessee, we want you to enjoy our beautiful lakes and rivers without worry. We’ll help you get the coverage you need to keep your boat (and bank account) safe.

What Does Boat Insurance Cover?
A proper boat insurance policy (often called watercraft insurance) can include:

  • Physical Damage Coverage: This pays to repair or replace your boat if it’s damaged by covered events such as collisions, grounding, fire, theft, or storms. It typically covers the boat itself, including the hull, motor(s), and often a trailer and any permanently attached equipment. For example, if your boat hits an underwater rock or is damaged by a sudden storm, this coverage handles the repair costs (minus your deductible).

  • Liability Insurance: Just like auto insurance, boat liability covers you if you are legally responsible for injuries or property damage to others. If your boat collides with another vessel or you accidentally injure a swimmer or skier, liability coverage would pay for their medical bills or repairs, and legal costs if you’re sued. Given the potential severity of boating accidents, we’ll advise carrying adequate liability limits.

  • Medical Payments: Covers minor medical costs for you or your passengers if anyone is hurt in a boating accident, regardless of fault. This can help with immediate expenses like ambulance rides or ER visits.

  • Uninsured Boater Coverage: Not everyone on the water carries insurance. If an uninsured or hit-and-run boater injures you or your passengers, this coverage can pay for medical bills that they would have been liable for.

  • Towing and Assistance: If your boat becomes disabled on the water (due to mechanical breakdown or even running out of fuel), this optional coverage helps cover the cost of emergency assistance or towing to shore. (Anyone who’s needed a tow back to the marina knows it can be expensive – nice to have coverage for that!)

  • Personal Effects & Fishing Equipment: You can add coverage for personal belongings on the boat (like clothing, phones, coolers) and specialized equipment (fishing gear, water sports equipment) in case they are lost or damaged due to a covered peril.

  • Trailer Coverage: If you use a trailer to transport your boat, we can ensure it’s included in the policy, so it’s covered for damage or theft as well.

We’ll tailor the policy to the type of boat or personal watercraft (PWC) you have – whether it’s a bass boat, pontoon, cabin cruiser, sailboat, Jet Ski, or anything in between.

Navigating Your Needs:

  • Agreed Value vs. Actual Cash Value: We can offer policies on an “agreed value” basis – meaning if your boat is a total loss, the insurer pays the value agreed upon when the policy was written (essentially the insured value). This avoids depreciation issues you’d face with an “actual cash value” policy. We’ll explain the difference and help you decide which is best for your vessel’s age and condition.

  • Lay-Up Periods: Don’t use your boat in the winter? Some policies offer a lay-up discount if the boat is stored and not used for a set period (e.g., December through February). We’ll check for any such savings if they apply to your usage pattern.

  • Safety Course Credits: Have you taken a boating safety course or have a clean boating record? Many carriers offer discounts for that. We’ll make sure to apply all eligible discounts – because saving money is always nice, whether on land or water.

Why Insure Your Boat Through Us:

  • Local Insight: We know the waterways around here. We understand common claims on our local lakes – whether it’s storm damage at the marina or incidents at popular spots. This insight helps us advise you on coverage (for example, if your boat stays docked at a marina vs. trailered to different lakes, we consider those factors). We’re insuring neighbors, not strangers, so you’ll get personalized attention.

  • Multiple Carriers: Just as with auto or home, we can shop multiple insurance companies to find the best boat insurance policy for you. Some companies might have better rates for bass boats, others for sailboats, etc. We’ll do the legwork to get you the right match in coverage and price.

  • Smooth Claims Handling: If something goes wrong – say your boat gets damaged in a storm – dealing with repairs and claims can be stressful. We’ll assist you through the process. Need recommendations for a good boat repair shop or questions about the claim estimate? We’ll be right there to help, just like we do for any home or auto claim.

Enjoy the Water Worry-Free:
We believe owning a boat should be fun and relaxing, not a source of anxiety. With proper insurance in place, you can drop your boat in the water and just focus on making memories – catching that big fish, pulling the kids on a tube, or watching a beautiful sunset from the deck. We’ll worry about the “what ifs” so you don’t have to.
